Who is Greyhound Friends?

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1983 and based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Our mission is to place retired racing greyhounds into responsible, loving homes. Greyhound Friends also educates the public about the greyhounds’ racing lives, the need for adoption, and the dogs’ suitability as family pets and companions.  A small staff and many dedicated volunteers operate our shelter. For more information about the organization and its history, please see About Us.

What message do you bring to the students?

Our outreach program focuses on the humane treatment of animals and community service. Additionally, we explain the unique history of the greyhound breed, the role Greyhound Friends plays in facilitating adoption, and the dogs’ transition between the track and home life.

Is your material age-appropriate?

Certainly. The outreach program was created by experienced educators. Our assemblies, curriculum, and awareness efforts are specifically tailored for each audience. It is never too early to begin educating students about the importance of kindness to animals, and instilling a broader sense of community involvement.

Have you worked with schools before?

Yes, many schools throughout Massachusetts have eagerly sought out our program. Our team has presented to more than 1,000 school-age children. Our outreach program is continually evolving and improving, and we’re confident in the quality of the content we deliver.

What resources does my school need to provide?

We bring all the materials, curriculum, volunteers, and “greyhound ambassadors” needed to present our program to your students. All we ask is an opportunity to deliver our message, raise awareness, and generate support for our shelter’s ongoing rescue work.

How much will it cost?

There is no set cost to the school or to participants. Our outreach efforts are a critical element in supporting our shelter and the needs of the greyhounds in our care. In order to continue offering our enrichment program at no cost, we have several fun and interesting fundraising options aimed at fostering student involvement and awareness.  Students and families are welcome to participate or not, on a purely voluntary basis.

Who will be coming to the school?

The Greyhound Friends outreach program is staffed by experienced volunteers, including a former teacher and a retired guidance counselor. They love spending time with children, as do the dogs we bring with us.

Can you tell me more about the greyhounds coming to the school?

Our canine ambassadors are handpicked for the program. They are especially gentle, patient and affectionate with children. Their detailed descriptions are on our Team Profiles page.

Commercial racing in Massachusetts has ended; why is this still an issue?

Greyhound racing continues both nationally and globally. We re-home greyhounds from West Virginia, Florida, and many other places where racing is still legal. The surplus of retired racing dogs far exceeds the capacity of shelter and adoption organizations.  As a result, Greyhound Friends’ role is as critical today as ever.  On a broader level, our message of community service and kindness to animals is always relevant.
